Did you ever think about what your life would look like if you would have made different choices in the past? Maybe if you would have chosen another major at university or if you would have moved to another city than the one you are in right now. What if you would have dated the cute guy in your office when you had the chance? I sometimes think about my life choices and how random they were at times. That doesn’t mean I regret them, I just think about how my life could have looked.
We live with the choices we make and some of us worked hard to get where we are now. But are you really happy? Is the place where you are right now really the place where you want to be? Where you imagined yourself when you were younger? I did an experiment a while ago by writing down 5 imaginary lives’. Lives I think I would have a lot of fun in. I want you to do the same.
If you had 5 other lives to lead, what would they look like? What would you do in each of them? I wrote down a ballerina, a herbalist, a professional puppy cuddler, a artist and a novelist. You might be a hacker, baker, a healer, a tennis player, a fisherman, a cook, an auto mechanic, a soccer player, a pilot, a belly dancer, a coach, a cop, a monk, a sculptor, a country singer, a soap-opera star, a guitarist, or a math teacher. Whatever pops in your head, write it down. You don’t have to explain them either. Just five short bullet points. Don’t overthink it. Be spontaneous and go with the flow. The most important thing is that you have fun in these imaginary lives. More than you might have in your current one.
After you write them all down I want you to take a couple of minutes and pick your favourite. Then do it this week. Yes, you read it right. This week. If you chose to be a fisherman go and get your fishing license and buy the gear you need. If your dream is to be sculptor how about a pottery class? Or if you wish to be an artist like me, go and get yourself a canvas and some paint. Just get started. It’s not that difficult. You don’t have to be good at it anyway. At least not yet.
Do this exercise once a month. You can use the same list you just created and choose another life. I for instance have a dog now, write articles for my own blog and make salad out of the plants I find in the park across the street. At the moment they are all hobbies but who knows where it will lead some day. Nothing is impossible.
Be creative. Be brave. Be you.
